UNIVERSITÀ E ACCADEMIE DI BELLE ARTI: DUE VASI NON COMUNICANTI

Gerardo de Simone, Emanuele Pellegrini

ABSTRACT
Despite their ancient and glorious history, Italian Academies of Fine Arts still lack a full recognition at the University level, unlike their international counterparts. This situation originates from Giovanni Gentile's school and university reform in the early 1920s: according to its idealistic philosophical premises, artistic and musical skills, being manual, rank as inferior to purely intellectual and scientific knowledge. Such a logical absurdity and cultural injustice has only partially been filled by the latest reform (1999). Art Academies, as well as Music Conservatories, should not only be given resources and opportunities comparable to those assigned to University faculties, but their dialogue with the University system should be more consistent and reciprocally effective.
