ABSTRACT
Among Italian art historians active between the two world wars, Stefano Bottari was one of the most involved in the popularization of art history in the school. Starting from lesson of Matteo Marangoni and Benedetto Croce, he wrote about the method and efficacy of teaching. Author of a successful and appreciated manual of Art History, published in the first edition in 1937, he shared some of methodological principles also with Carlo Ludovico Ragghianti. In the mid- sixties, he expressed his position in favor of art schools and their renewal following the tradition focused on the materials of Italian artistic culture.
