squareTHE GREEK ECONOMIC CRISIS
AND ITS REVERBERATIONS UPON ANTIQUITIES

Giorgos Vavouranakis

This paper argues that the recent economic crisis in Greece has endangered its archaeological heritage. The causes of this phenomenon are both circumstantial and structural, but the heart of the matter lies in the way, for a long time, the Greek state has employed antiquities in order to fashion the concept of Greek national identity. The future management of antiquities should first abandon the current fetishisation of monuments and focus upon the production of knowledge about the past as the basis of a dynamic public archaeology.
