IL CASTELLO DEI DESTINI INCROCIATI. lL CASTELLO DI FERRARA VISTO DA JOHN COZENS E WILLIAM TURNER

Lucia Bonazzi

ABSTRACT
When J. M. William Turner visited Ferrara in 1819, during his first Grand Tour in Italy, he had already painted a view of the Este Castle of San Michele, about 20 years earlier, through the eyes and the direct experience of another extraordinary English landscape painter, John Cozens. It is likely that Cozens' Ferrara drawing was reelaborated by Turner, possibly with the collaboration of Girtin, around 1794-97 at Dr Monro's house where the two artists were employed. Monro may have subsequently ceded it to sir George Beaumont, who supported Cozens in his last years.
